The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government student financial aid scheme which provides financial aid to undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school.

Who is NSFAS?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a public entity reporting to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). It provides financial assistance in the form of study bursaries to qualifying students who plan to study at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and public universities.

This is what the scheme does:

  • Supports access to, and success in, higher education and training for students from poor and working-class families who would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of studying at a TVET college or university.
  • Provides bursaries to qualifying students at TVET colleges and public universities.

University of KwaZulu-Natal NSFAS Application

The National Bursary Rules and Guidelines of the Department of Higher Education and Training determine the permitted study cost each year. NSFAS will distribute funds to qualified students depending on their authorized cost of attendance; this does not include coverage for clubs and societies or any fines.

Applicants must visit their My NSFAS portal to see if their application has been approved. NSFAS will notify universities on the funding eligibility of new and returning students.
After registration, qualified students’ registration (cost of study) charges will be remitted to NSFAS.
